Teaching students of all ages about photography is a blast for me. I like the exchange of energy and it helps keep me on my toes.
I am good at introducing photography concepts to novice students in a way that is easy for them to absorb. And I love challenging the intermediate students who are trying to continue their progression. The different classes I offer are detailed below.

Davis High School:
I offer two different evening classes for adults and teenagers through the Davis School District's Continuing Education Program and conducted at Davis High. Each class runs six weeks and is two hours a night (7-9). The classes are each offered three times a year: one beginning in mid-September, one in mid-January, and one in early April. Specific dates are published about four weeks in advance of the first night. The course descriptions are below. Scheduling details can be found at the Davis High School page of the DSD website.

NOTICE: I have had to cancel the Tuesday and Wednesday evening classes scheduled for fall quarter. However, I will still offer the beginning class on Thursday evenings.

1. Beginning Digital Photography

Geared toward hobbyists of any age, this class will cover basic camera operation, digital terminology, exposure, metering, composition principles, lighting (existing and flash) and presentation. Students will learn more about how to use the camera's controls and accessories to produce better images and get more enjoyment from their involvement with photography.

This class will introduce image manipulation concepts, but it is not a Photoshop class. Rather, students will be given creative assignments designed to explore and utilize class topics. Constructive review and critique sessions will help measure student progress and continue the learning process.

Requirements:
Basic computer familiarity, and any digital camera.

2. Photography - Beyond the Basics

This second-level class is an effective way for enthusiastic amateurs to "take the next step." In it, we will give you more hands-on use of cameras during class time. We'll have more challenging assignments, followed by more constructive critiques.
Beginning classes introduce camera features - this one will present various situations and help students learn which features they might want to put to use for each. Students will become more comfortable with manual camera settings and overrides and when to use them. They will learn more about various ways to get good exposures and will become more aware of light and learn how to control and improve it when necessary, including modifying light from flash.

At least one session will be devoted completely to portraiture. Steve will also demonstrate how to clean your camera's sensors a perform a monitor calibration. We will stay flexible to take student requests!

Prerequisites:
A digital SLR camera and a basic understanding of most of the camera's controls. Ability to complete weekly assignments. A passion to get better! Helpful but not required are: an external flash, tripod, multiple lenses (wide angle, telephoto and/or macro)

Workshops
I also conduct several one-evening-only field trip workshops from time to time, mainly during the warmer months. These sessions give students the chance to get hands-on help with issues like aperture, shutter speed, posing, lighting, etc. I work them in whenever I have open spots in my schedule, so I can't give you exact dates here. But you can ask to be put on my email list and I will keep you updated as the workshops get scheduled.
